Position Description for Nutritionist (WIC Program)

Summary:


This is a professional level position requiring previous experience and training in nutritional health education or other closely related field. This position also requires the ability to work closely with others and speak in front of small groups.


This is a part-time to full time position (depending on the applicant’s preference) responsible for providing nutritional education, breastfeeding information, support and referrals to pregnant women and families with children. This position is directly responsible to the Executive Director.


The Ron Wood Family Resource Center’s (RWFRC) aim is to educate and assist in developing healthy youth and families in Carson City and surrounding areas through prevention, intervention and educational services. The program components are further described below, under Duties and Responsibilities.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Direct Services: Direct services will be provided to families of Carson City and surrounding areas, which include:


Refers high-risk participants to other health-related and social services, as necessary.

Prescribes food packages to high-risk participants, as appropriate.

Develops individual care plans for high-risk participants.

Coordinates nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support that is responsive to the identified needs/interests of each

high-risk participant.

Conducts breastfeeding assessment for all breastfeeding women.

Documents providing referrals and conducting appropriate follow-up to referrals to high-risk participants.

Tracks high-risk participants’ progress in improving their health and document for outcomes.

Provide nutritional counseling to participants of the WIC Program based on State guidelines and training information.

Provide basic nutrition information training to other staff in order to prepare them to make nutritional counseling referrals.

Participate in education training, health fair, community meetings and job related programs including State of Nevada WIC Conferences and

in-service trainings.

Accurately document all client contact and services provided.

Prepare reports and keep track of statistics regarding program data, as needed, as per request of the Executive Director.

Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:


Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:


Nutritionist or Registered Dietitian (RD) Qualifications:

  • Has successfully completed 17 CPA training modules within 6 months of hire, the MIECN course (if desired) within 6 months of hire, and 35 hour required breastfeeding training within 1 year of hire, AND
  • (Preferably) has credentials of a Registered Dietitian (R.D.) or eligibility for registration with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Commission on Dietetic Registration; if applicable, has State license or certified as a nutritionist/dietitian, or
  • Holds a Bachelor’s degree in the field of nutrition from an accredited college or university, or
  • Holds a Master’s or Doctoral degree in nutrition from an accredited college or university, or
  • Licensure as a Register Nurse in the State of Nevada and has verifiable experience/education in nutrition education.


Experience: Prior experience with WIC Program service is helpful, but not required. At least two years direct work experience in customer service and clerical duties is preferred. Bi-lingual, Spanish speaking candidates preferred as well.


Knowledge of:


Children and their behavior at various stages in life; knowledge of the problems facing children, youth, and families in contemporary environments; nutritional case management, including community resource coordination, and crisis management experience; appropriate techniques for working with children, youth and families; basic techniques for coordinating and facilitating programs and services/activities; basic record-keeping.


Skill at:


Working with the general public in a professional manner; being a self-starter; working with and engaging a diverse and challenging population with differing needs; ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and in writing; bilingual skill in English and Spanish is preferred; performing mathematical/statistical analysis is preferred.


Licenses/Certificates: Professional licenses are preferred.


Requirements:


Have reliable transportation to attend trainings, meetings, etc.

Must be willing to submit to a background investigation, which includes fingerprinting. Persons rejected as a result of the background investigation will be removed from the eligible list.

Must be willing to adhere to ethical standards of conduct and issues regarding confidentiality as set forth in the agency’s policies.


Details:


Wages: 25.00+ DOE. Additional salary would be available based education/experience.

This position is dependent upon grant funding and wages are based upon experience and availability of funds. This position may be contractual or regular employment with benefits based on number of hours worked and prospective employee’s preference.
